Classics of Crap Volume 28: Waterworld

Hey gang! Today's crap movie is a bit water-logged. That's right, it's Waterworld, aka, "Kevin's Gate". This movie at first seemed to have everything going for it. Costner was on top of the world, having just won Oscars for Dances with Wolves. His career was going amazingly well. Turning in a great performance in JFK, as well as great work in the criminally underrated A Perfect World, Costner was about to drop a bomb on his career that he's still never recovered from.

Despite an intriguing premise, the film was almost DOA on arrival, thanks to months of bad press, reports of the director being fired, Costner severely reshaping the film, the sets sinking, and a budget that at the time made Waterworld the most expensive movie ever made. A lot was riding on this film, and, when it arrived, the public shrugged. The movie is now probably better known for being a stunt show at Universal Studios theme parks, and I'd wager a guess that more people have seen the attraction than the actual movie it was based off of. I don't hate Waterworld, but it's such a huge case of wasted opportunity. Crippled by the hubris of the filmmakers, it is currently floating in the sea of five dollar dvd's in your Walmart discount bin.

PS. If you've ever wanted to see Kevin Costner drink his own piss, this is the movie for you.
